Style

Timeless style is not the absence of fashion. It is the presence of proportion, restraint and good judgement.

What we mean by timeless
The word is often used as a polite way of saying plain. We mean something different: a garment whose proportions, fabric and finish are so well judged that it does not date quickly.
Proportion over novelty
Look at the buildings people still travel to see. Their power comes from proportion, rhythm and material, not from novelty. The same is true of dresses. A well-balanced line can look right across decades.
The role of restraint
Restraint is difficult. It requires deciding what a dress does not need. Each seam, button and pleat has to justify itself, and those that do not are left out.
Wearing the past lightly
Heritage fashion offers a rich archive of shapes and details. The task is to borrow what still feels alive and leave the costume behind, so that a dress feels like it belongs to the present without being tied to it.
How to choose well
Ask whether you would still like a piece in five years, whether it works with what you already own, and whether it fits the life you actually lead. If the answer is yes, it is probably timeless enough.
